Ponder over the facts of the case, and the dcplorable situation in which such tragedies happen may appear to you in an altogether new light. The youth was sent to the town for education. Evidently, he was expected to learn sonieihing that could not be learncil in the village. It was not his fault that he had lived up to the expectation. One cannot breathe in the atmosphere of inodern education, however defective, half and half, so to say: Take in so much as necessary to be a clerk or a ininor official or a lawyer or a medical practitioner, and shun the rest as a source of corruption. In any case, a town is entirely different from a small village. For good or cvil, (I believe it is for the goo-l), the mentality of the body of Indian students in higher educational institutions is in a flux. The belief in traditional values, moral as well as social, is greatly shaken, though far from being overcoine as yet. New ideas and strange idcals are agitating the youth-of both the sexes. No impressionable adolescent could live in such an atmosphere without being carricd away by the spirit of the time, if not as yet positively of revolt. The inevitable rlisturbance of ideas and emotions is bound to be all the greater in cases of those who come to this atmosphere of partial freedom and incipient revolt suddenly, having lived until then in the placid 191
