________________ Notes 225 certain special vows, for one month in the case of the first, for two months in the case of the second, and so on in the ascending order of months, the eleventh pratima being observed for eleven months. The total period of all the pratimas comes to be five years and a half. er gi, as prescribed in the Sutras., in the manner (hey) prescribed. , according to procedure, ' , according to the true nature of the standard. The upāsaka who is observing these pratimas sits in a meditative posture of the body during the period prescribed, thinking of the particular vow in question. Netsu fer is described (1) Of these the first called as follows: संकादिसल्लविरहियसम्महंसणजुमो उ जो जन्तु 1 Aayufqwget gal UG ÉTE YGAT 3 11 "The first pratimā of an upāsaka is one in which a person cultivates right faith ( सम्यग्दर्शन or सम्यक्त्व, 88 described in section 44) free from its aticāras such as suspicion (mentioned in section 44), irrespective of other qualities or vows (T)." (2) The second is called वयपडिमा, व्रतप्रतिमा : दंसणपडिमा जुत्ता पालेन्तोऽणुव्वए निरइयारे । अणुकम्पाइगुणजुओ जीवा इह होइ वयपडिमा ॥ "The second vratapratima is one in which the upāsaka, after having cultivated the af, observes the five ayans free from their aticāras, and practises virtues such as compassion." 15/
