9. Avanti
Puruşottama derives Avantī from an admixture of Mahāraş. tri and Sauraseni (Pu XI 1) But according to Rāmaśarma (II 2.5) the Avanti and the Bāhliki dialects are practically the same The only difference is that they are used by different characters in a drama Basically the forms of Bāblīkī are derived from an admixture of Sauraseni and Prācyā (II 2 5) But Mārkandeya (XI 1) follows the view of Purusottama when he says“Avantī syān Mahārāsfrī-Saurasenyostu sankarāt" In this commentary he adds that the countries Malava, Ujjayini etc, constitute the Avantideśa, and says—"rad bhavā Āvanti-Dandikādibhāsā" He quotes a verse from Bharata which is not found in the Nātyśāstra
