________________ xxxviii DESINĀMAMĀLA on the text is written in Sanskrit. It explains in each 'Desi' word by its Sanskrit equivalent and gives reasons when even any word is included in the list of 'Deśï' words against the principles laid down by the author, or is omitted though regarded by earlier authors as 'Desi'. One Prakrit Gatha is then inserted to illustrate the use of words (having only one meaning) contained in each Gatha of the Text. The work is divided into eight Vargas which classify the words according to their initial letters. These Vargas with the number of Gathas in each are noted below: Varga. First Varga Second Varga Third Varga Fourth Varga Fifth Varga Sixth Varga Seventh Varga Eighth Varga Initial letters of the words in the Varga. Vowels Gutterals Palatals Linguals Dentals Labials Liquids Sibilants and Aspirate Number of Gathas. 174 112 62 51 63 148 96 77 Total Gathas-783 The total number of Desi words found in the text and the Commentary are 3,978. The illustrative Gathas found in the Sanskrit Commentary on the text number 782. On account of their lexicographical importance combined with their character as ingenious specimens of poetry they are treated separately in Section III. The following authors on 'Deśi' vocables are quoted in the Deśīnāmamālā : 1. Abhimanacihna, (I, 144; VI, 93; VII, 1; VIII, 12, 17).
