देह की जीव संज्ञा व्यवहार से है -
पज्जत्तापज्जत्ता जे सुहमा वादरा य जे जीवा। देहस्स जीवसण्णा सुत्ते ववहारदो उत्ता॥
(2-29-67)
जो पर्याप्त तथा अपर्याप्त और जो सूक्ष्म तथा वादर जीव कहे गये हैं, वे देह की अपेक्षा जीव संज्ञाएँ हैं। वे सब परमागम में व्यवहार नय से कही गई हैं।
The developed and undeveloped, and subtle and gross, are classifications of living beings, termed jīvas, from the standpoint of their physical constitution. And the scriptures convey this from the empirical point of view (vyavahāra naya).
गुणस्थान जीव नहीं हैं -
मोहणकम्मस्सुदया दु वण्णिदा जे इमे गुणट्ठाणा। ते किह हवंति जीवा जे णिच्चमचेदणा उत्ता॥
(2-30-68)
जो ये गुणस्थान हैं, वे मोहनीय कर्म के उदय से बतलाये गये हैं। जो नित्य अचेतन कहे गये हैं, वे जीव किस प्रकार हो सकते हैं?
The stages of spiritual development (guņasthāna) are stated to be the result of deluding karmas (mohanīya karma). How can these, which are eternally non-conscious, be identified with the consciousjiva?
