by Mr. Colebrooke, the most eminent of all our Sanskrit scholars, in the eighth volume of the Researches of the Asiatic Society of Bengal'. The account, with a variety of instructive dissertations on the religion, philosophy, science, and literature of the Hindus, has been reprinted in a Collection of Miscellaneous Essays?, published by Mr. Colebrooke, or rather for him, not long before his death. The text also, with a Latin translation of one book out of eight, of one of the Vedas, the Rig-Veda, has been printed by the Committee of the Oriental Translation Fund'. It was

[Since the above was written, the Súmaveda has been edited and translated by Stevenson (1812) and Benfey (18-18); the white Yajurveda edited by Weber (1849 ff.); the black Jajurveda is in the course of publication in the Bibliotheca ludica; the Atharraveda has been edited by Roth and Whitney (1835 ff.), and an edition of the Rigreda with the commentary of Sayana was commenced by M. Müller in 1819, which is still in progress. Prof. Wilson's translation of the Rigveda (1830-57, 3 Vols.) reaches to the end of the 4th Ashtaka. Dr. Aufrecht is editing the text of the Rigveda in Roman characters (Vol. I, 1861).
