At this time the Mohammedan creed was very widely disused, and the current formula was خليفة انتح La Ill illa Allali, wa al لا الہ الاالله . الا دب Akbar Khalifat Alláh. There is no God but God, and the Mighty (or Akbar), is his vicegerent. An insurrection in Jainpur was one consequence of these innovations. It is asserted in the Koran, that all children are born in the faith," and Akbar determined to put this to the test of experiment. He procured twenty infants, and ordered them to be brought up in a retired place, and separate apartments, without being allowed any communication with society. At the expiration of a few years, such as survived were liberated, when it was found that they could not talk at all. The place where they had been reared was thence called Gúng Mahal, the Dumb Asylum. A number of new edicts were now promulgated. Wine was allowed to be drunk, with the caution, that any excesses consequent upon the use of it would be rigorously punished. Places were established for the sale of it, under the authority of the court, and the names of all purchasers were registered. It is said, that pieces of swine's flesh were put into the barrels. Singers and dancers, and persons of loose character, were confined to a particular quarter, thence called Sheitánpur, and placed under the charge of a special police. Gaines of chance were also sanctioned under proper superintendence, and money was advanced
