S O (1) Scepticism (Shanka)—Itmeans doubt. In other words, it SN denotes the doubt in existence of things ascertained by the Lord E N as they are (tattvas) namely soul, hell, heaven, merits, demerits, S etc. Here the question arises—Should a person not consider the S N religious concepts from different angles ? In case there is any S doubt in the mind, should he not go deep to study it from different N E points of view to clear his doubts and to fully grasp its true N meaning. Reply to this query is that there is a great difference in S scepticism and deeper research to remove doubt. In case the S N thought activity about any concept makes the faith shaky, it is E Scepticism (Shanka). If questioning is done without an iota of S weaknessin faith, it is not Scepticism. It rather strengthens the S faith. Gautam Swamithefirst disciple ofBhagavan Mahavir was O E considered one having extremely firm faith in Mahavir.
