नौकारोहण विधि (१) भिक्षु को ग्रामानुग्राम विहार करते समय यदि मार्ग में कोई बड़ी नदी आ जाये जिसे नाव
द्वारा पार करने के सिवाय अन्य कोई रास्ता न हो तो भिक्षु प्रथम नौका-स्वामी की स्वीकृति
प्राप्त करे। (२) फिर अपना सभी सामान कंधे व पीठ पर बाँध लेवे। फिर एक पैर जल में और एक पैर
स्थल में रखता हुआ यतनापूर्वक नौका में चढ़े। (सूत्र १३८) (३) नौका में संयत होकर निर्लिप्त और निर्भीक भाव से बैठ जाये। (सूत्र १३९) (४) नौका-यात्रा के मध्य यदि किसी कारणवश उसे उतरना पड़े या कोई विपत्ति आ जाये तो
सब उपकरण अपने शरीर से बाँधकर, जीवन-मरण की चिन्ता से मुक्त रहकर कायोत्सर्ग करके जल में प्रवेश कर जाये। अथवा यात्रा निर्विघ्न सम्पन्न होने पर किनारे पर कुछ देर गीला शरीर व वस्त्र आदि सुखाने के लिए कायोत्सर्ग करके खड़ा रहे। फिर सूखी निर्दोष भूमि पर अकेला मौनभावपूर्वक आगे विहार करे।

PROCEDURE OF BOARDING A BOAT (1) While wandering from one village to another if an ascetic comes
across a large river and there is no other way to cross the river but in a boat, he should first of all seek permission from the
owner of the boat. (2) After that he should tie his possessions on his shoulders and
back. Then he should carefully go aboard the boat putting one
feet in water and the other on land. (aphorism 138) (3) He should compose himself and sit in the boat without any fear
or attachment. (aphorism 139) (4) During the boat ride if he has to abandon the boat for some
reason or some disaster strikes, the ascetic should tie his possessions to his body and enter the water dissociating his mind from his body and freeing himself of any thoughts of life and death. When he reaches the bank he should stand there in kayotsarga to dry his body and clothes. Finally, he should resume his solitary wandering silently on dry and faultless land.
