कर्म का अग्र और मूल
“अग्गं च मूलं च विगिंच धीरे।" हे धीर पुरुष ! कर्म के अग्र और मूल दोनों का विवेक करो, इन्हें पहचानो।
-अ. ३, उ. १, सूत्र ११६ १. कर्म का मूल अर्थात् जड़ है, राग और द्वेष तथा इनसे आगे वृक्ष बढ़ता है, वह है अग्र अर्थात् दर्शनावरणीय, ज्ञानावरणीय, मोहनीय, अन्तराय, वेदनीय, आयुष्य, नाम और गोत्र कर्म ये आठ कर्म उसके अग्र-शाखाएँ। विविध प्रकृतियाँ पत्ते के समान हैं।
-उत्तराध्ययन ३२/५ २. सब कर्मों का मूल है-मोहनीय कर्म तथा ज्ञानावरणीय आदि अन्य सात कर्म उसके अग्र हैं। उसी मोह वृक्ष की शाखाएँ हैं।
-दशाश्रुत स्कन्ध ५/११-१४ (अ. ३, उ. २, सूत्र १०२) चलनी में जल
“से केयणं अरिहए पूरइत्तए।" जो मनुष्य धन व भोगोपभोग की वस्तुओं से अपनी इच्छा को भरना चाहता है वह ऐसा बात्य प्रयास करता है जैसे कोई व्यक्ति झरनों से बहती जलधारा से चलनी को भरना चाहता है। यह सम्भव नहीं है।

-3/1/116 1. Attachment and aversion are like roots, and the tree that develops out of these is the tip which includes the eight karmas-Mohaniya, Antaraya, Jnanavaraniya, Darshanavaraniya, Vedaniya, Ayushya, Naam and Gotra. The various manifestations of these karmas are like leaves of the tree.
--Uttaradhyayan 3215 2. The mohaniya karma is the root of all karmas and the remaining seven are like tips.

A person who wants to fulfill his desires by acquiring wealth and other mundane pleasures and comforts is doing something childish like an attempt to fill a strainer with water from rivers and streams. That is impossible.
