149 for their view that testimony is a source independent of inference. What Akalanka, the eminent Jaina logician, has observed in the context of analogy (upamāna) applies equally to testimony. He says : If merely on the strength of such trivial differences among various pieces of knowledge we were to regard them as independent sources, then there would be innumerable independent sources. This is a healthy attitude and the Jaina logicians should have maintained it even in the case of testimony.
