________________ 302 moment the Yaksa Sailaka tossed him off his back. The wicked witch rushed forward and caught him with her hands before he plunged into the sea. She tossed him up in the sky and as he was shrieking with frighi, she cut him into small pieces, as he came hurtling down. She collected all the pieces of his body and threw them in all directions as if they werre oblatory offerings. She appeared to be enjoying this gory action. Jinaraksita's story should be a warning to every one. Once you have decided to renounce worldly desires and pleasures but failed to resist the temptations to go back to them it will certainly involve you into the kind of fate that Jinarakṣita had to accept The Ratnadvi pa woman then tried to tackle the other brother. She tried the same tactics but Jinapālita would have nothing to do with her and after many persistent attempts, which were as firmly rebuffed, she went back to her own island. The Yaksa carried Jinapalita across the whole of the Lavana ocean and brought him safely as far as the city of Campā. There in a garden outside the city he bid farewell to his lucky rider. The lone Mäkandi son went home and told his parents the news of the dreadful death that had fallen to the lot of Jinaraksita. All the members of the family, who were joined by friends and relatives performed the funeral rites for the unfortunate Jinaraksita. Jinapálita was inspired by the great Mahāvira to renounce the world and after a long and holy life of faith, he attained salvation as people who never crave for human pleasures and enjoyments deservedly do.
