________________ THE AWAKENING OF KARKANDU According to the king's order Brahmins and chandals dined together. The king then made them stand under a large canopy and sprinkled holy water over them. He said Now all chandals have become Brahmins. All their life they will follow the rules of refraining from killing animals, consuming meat and alcohol, stealing, and adultery. Sire! I am the same poor Brahmin to whom you had promised to donate a village. With the change in attitude and behaviour the caste changed. The chandals accepted the pious way of life like Brahmins. King Karkandu also recognized the Brahmin The glory of Karkandu spread far and near.
