________________ 63 7. In the prose-introduction directly after the fifth verse of the Marigala, p.2, 11.3 ff., the following piece is given: 9. See Prabhāvakacaritra XXII, 9 where the town is called "a firm stage of might (of the faith)", and Note 16. Merutunga (see Note 15) adds that the town lies in the Ardhastama district. The name Ardhāstama refers probably, like many similar ones, to the number of localities belonging to the district and signifies "containing twelve villages or towns". The Modherakārdhāstama is mentioned in the grant of land of Mularāja, Indian Antiquary, vol. VI, p. 192. As regards the modern town Dhandhūkā, see Sir W. W. Hunter, Imperial Gazetteer, sub voce, and Bombay Gazetteer, vol IV, p. 334. 10. The year of birth is given by Jinamandana and in Prabh. Car. XXII, 852 (see below Note 14), compare also Note 16. In future, I shall only give the Vikrama years, because the transmutation into the Christian yours cannot generally be effected with certainty. 11. The name of the father is Cācah in the Prabhāvakacaritra; in Rājas'ekhara it is always, and in Jinamandana sometimes, Cācikah. The name of the mother is written Pahins by Merutunga and Rajas'ekhara. The Srimodh Vāniās are numerous even to-day. There are also numerous Brahmins who call themselves after the same place Srinodh. (Journ. B. Br. R. A. S. Vol X, pp. 109-110). The name of both is derived from tho ancient town Modhera, south of Anhilvad, see Mr. K. Forbes, Rās Mālā r. 80. 12. The MSS. have also sometimes Cangadevo. Meruturiga (see Note 15) says that Pāhini belonged to the Cāmundāgotra, and that her son's name therefore began with o. Cănga of Cangas may, however, be connected with the Des'i word cangam, Sindhi cangu, 'good', and Marăthi, cāingalā, 'good'. 13. Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
