ગુપ્તકાળમાં જૈનધર્મ
૧૮૯ સમયમાં થયા તે સમયને લાક્ષણિક રીતે તેઓ પિતાની પ્રસ્તાવનામાં રજા કરે છે. તેઓ જણાવે છે કે આ રસપ્રદ કથા શક સંવત ૭૦૦ અર્થાત્ ઈ.સ. ૭૭૯ માં સમાપ્ત થઈ. આ અનેક કૃતિઓ રચાયાનો કાળ છે કે જેમાં કેટલાક લેખકેએ પિતાનાં નામો પણ દર્શાવવાની ઉપેક્ષા કરી છે. આમ છતાં ઐતિહાસિક દષ્ટિએ કુવલયમાલા ગ્રંથરચનાકાળ તથા સંજોગોનું ઠીક ભાન કરાવે છે અને તેના કર્તા મહાન સૂરિની ગુરુપરંપરા એમાં આપે છે. આપણને મળી આવતા પ્રાસ્તાવિક કેમાંના ડાક ઉપયોગી નીચે પ્રમાણે છે -
(१) अस्थि पुहईपसिद्धा दोण्णि पहा दोणि चेय देस त्ति।
तत्थत्थि पहं णामेण उत्तरावहं बुहजणाइण्णं ॥ (२) सुइदिअचारुसोहा विअसिअकमलाणणा विमलदेहा ।
तत्थरिथ जलहिदइआ सरिआ अह चंदभाय त्ति ॥ (३) तीरम्मि तीय पयडा पव्वइया णाम रयणसोहिल्ला ।
जत्थरिथ ठिए भुत्ता पुहई सिरितोरराएण ॥ (४) तस्स गुरू हरिउत्तो आयरिओ आसि गुत्तवंसाओ।
तीय णयरीय दिण्णो जेण णिवेसो तहिं काले॥
(५) तस्स वि सिस्सो पयडो महाकई देवउत्तणामो त्ति। 3 । ઉપરોક્ત લેકેનો સાર આ છે “વિશ્વમાં બે પથ અને બે દેશ (દક્ષિણપથ અને ઉત્તરાપથ) પ્રખ્યાત છે તેમાં ઉત્તરાપથ વિદ્વાનને દેશ છે. તે દેશમાં સમુદ્રની રાણું માફક ચંદ્રભાગા નદી વહે છે. તેને કાંઠે પવઈયા નામે સમૃદ્ધિસંપન્ન અને પ્રખ્યાત શહેર છે. શ્રી તેરરાય જ્યારે અહીં હતા ત્યારે પૃથ્વી પર રાજ્ય ભેગવતા હતા. ગુપ્તવંશના હરિગુપ્ત તે રાજાના ગુરુ હતા અને આ સમયે તે પિતે ત્યાં જ વસતા હતા. દેવગુપ્ત કે જે મહાકવિ હતા તે આ આચાર્યના શિષ્ય હતા.”

Jinavijaya informs us that only two manuscript copies of Kuvalayamala are available at present--one in the Government collection at Poona and the other in the Jaina Bhandara at Jesalmer. Both copies differ from each other in minor points as well as in points of great historical importance. [तस्स] बहुकलाकुसलो सिद्धन्तवियाणओ कई दक्खो। आयरिय देवगुत्तो ज [स्स] जवि विज्जरए कित्ती ।
