the Nyāyasūtras of Gautama while the Nyāyamañjari, the magnum opus of Jayanta, is an independent treatise, based on the Nyāyasūtras. It elucidates all the important tenets of Nyāyaśāstra.
Date and Life of the Author :
Though there are disputes about the date of Jayanta, it is possible to arrive at a difinite conclusion at least regarding the century in which he lived. Some clues given by the author himself come to our aid in this regard. They are
यदपूर्वमिति विदित्वा निवारयामास धर्मतत्त्वज्ञः। राजा शंकरवर्मा न पुनर्जनादिमतमेवम् ॥

राज्ञा तु गह्वरेऽस्मिन् अशब्दके बन्धने विनिहितोऽहम् । ग्रन्थरचनाविनोदादिह हि मया वत्सरा गमिताः ॥ तथा ह्यस्मप्त्पितामह एव ग्रामकामः सांग्रहिणीं कृतवान् । स इष्टिसमाप्तिसमनन्तरमेव गौरमूलकं ग्राममवाप ॥
Nyayamanjari (P.653) एतेन शब्दसामर्थ्यमहिम्ना सोऽपि वारितः। यमन्यः पण्डितंमन्यः प्रपेदे कंचन ध्वनिम् ॥

From the above, it becomes clear that Jayanta lived during the reign of King sankarayarman, and it is said that the latter put our author behind the bars for some reason not known to us. Sankaravarman
