Become a devotee of all Tirthankars, and attain their blessings. In the sunrise of purity, remember your own blissful soul and offer your guru one ray of happiness from within. On the most auspicious morning, pray to the monks and make your offering. The true guru is our auspicious awakening. Shree Kundkund Aacharya is our auspicious awakening. While playing in the garden of the knower, smell the fragrance of the true flower, your soul. Live in the house of happiness and obtain the treasure of your own soul. Complete immersion in the Jain teachings is the true morning of our life. The fruits of this immersion are given to you by the souls who have attained moksha, Arhant Dev. As your own mother wishes and blesses, may your strength and keen perception give you the ability to utilize the wheel of pure religion. Within you, believe that your mother's wish is of utmost importance and you will both benefit. At present this Tirthankar in Videh Kshetra, another planet, is giving sermons every day. Page #7 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Dedication Dedicated to Pujya Gurudev Kanjiswami and Pujya Champa Bahen Shree The inspiring letter on the previous page was written by Pujya Champa Bahen Shree for the son of one of her devotees, an engineer residing in the United States of America. Since I have lived in the USA for the last 40 years, almost all my adult life, I connected with this letter as if it was written for me by my Bahen Shree. Every word seemed to awaken me, inspire me. While no Tirthankar walks the planet Earth today, the first line of Bahen Shree's letter says that there is indeed a Tirthankar named Shree Simandhar Swami who is awakening us every day in a faraway planet known as Videh Kshetra. This emphasizes that our faith and our tirthankars are eternal: they were always present, are currently present, and will always be present. In my upbringing, I understood that the key to Jainism is to discipline myself to resist greed, anger, and other vices. However, Bahen Shree offers a profoundly different perspective. She insists that souls do not require discipline; to the contrary when we discover the true nature of the soul, it is complete in itself, pure, free, and full of unlimited happiness. The soul is not the Doer, Controller, but is just the natural super-complete Knower. To understand, realize, and experience the 06 Page #8 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ free soul is the true Jain living. By experiencing my own pure nature, I naturally free myself from all my vices. In fact, Bahen Shree encourages us to play in the garden of the knower," "smell the flower of happiness." Traditionally play and religion never go together--temples require that we wear new clothing, remain quiet, and not eat. As a Pathshala Teacher, I did somersaults with my pupils while reciting Namokar Mantra. It is in that child-like, free and playful state when we are able to release from the distractions of the physical world to discover an inner freedom. This is the only thing worth doing in this precious human life. I have already played in worldly gardens for a long time and always pined for inner peace. Bahen Shree expresses her wish that we find the true nature within us. By knowing my true nature, free of desires and hatred, I will experience eternal peace and happiness. I examine my life and recognize that happiness and sorrow come and go and I am always left with a deep dissatisfaction. I am inspired to know my true nature and to transcend this turmoil of temporary emotions. In this letter Bahen Shree equates the word "offering" to a ray of happiness from within. All these years when I went to a temple, I thought the symbolic offerings of rice, saffron, coconut, and fruits were a method of expressing the absence of greed, anger, and possessiveness. I never comprehended that the offering of a true devotee is not the absence of vices but sharing bliss from within. A Jain devotee strives to experience inner bliss in every action, thought and word. Page #9 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Bahen Shree is able to guide me with such clarity, force, and love because she experienced inner happiness herself after studying the teachings of Gurudev Kanjiswami. You must have heard about the Gurudev: an extraordinary fearless person who has explained Jain religion and the true nature of the soul with clarity, depth, and simplicity. His voice rings in my ears; I can never forget the words he has spoken. I hope that Bahen Shree's letter allows you to connect with my Gurudev and Bahen Shree. I have never met either of them, however I feel very fortunate to be able to connect with them through their voices and writings. The poems in this book are inspired by Gurudev and Bahen Shree and this book is sincerely dedicated to them. I am responsible for any mistakes or limitations in the book. Please forgive me for that. I hope that all readers also find their own true nature, eternal bliss, and peace, with their own Purusharth (effort). Another life again Five senses continue to know something or another Mind keeps thinking, conscious or unconscious Emotions swing between good or bad feelings, immersed in these thoughts These lead me to take actions Stop and think, have you wondered whether there is something constant in this flow? That does not give way to this flow? Isn't this the world's biggest wonder? We get so consumed in the flow that it is hard to even imagine We can experience the constant too So far I kept occupied with the flow, thought that this flow is me and I have to live the flow, keep or maintain what I like and remove or change what I do not like. This has been my biggest mistake, foolishness and obstacle for not being able to Know, believe, recognize, feel the true, constant me! 13 Page #15 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ We think knowledge is to understand the world, things, systems, something new. To enjoy the novelties, varieties. The more topics we know about, the smarter we feel Or are we smarter to know fewer topics but with depth? Do we ever wonder about the knower? The knower exists; independent, complete, free, blissful Gold remains gold in necklace, bracelet, white or yellow Sugar remains sweet even mixed with coffee The soul never changes with the change in body The flow and steadfast seem to be together, but they are completely separate The respected do not react, but stay steadfast in their own belief They cope with the flow without any pain or suffering. They know reacting to the world generates desires and aversions The world is constantly changing, never stays the same, But I can stay the same, blissful, peaceful, happy Even if nailed to the cross, totally naked Meditating in one posture or wandering Poor or have all the riches of the world With degrees or no formal education at all I stay the same forever and ever, never to change Page #16 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ I, the knower, have my own immense qualities to sustain myself To be able to know the flow of the world revolving To be able to experience myself The perfect me, blissful, peaceful, steadfast That is me within the flow of this world! A teacher, a guide, a spiritual educator An awakener The one who shows the path to complete purity, bliss, happiness within. 16 Why one needs a guru? He has walked a path He has realized its fruits He enables me to find my path. Who appreciates the guru? He who has learned and achieved He who has heard the lessons and realized the truth He who has walked the path and experienced the fruits of the path. Once I read my guru's writing My perspective opened, I felt my inner feelings A dialogue started within Learned invaluable principles of life I never understood. | Page #18 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Guru transformed my thinking My lifestyle, my looks My priorities, my vision This is the true guru, who helped me realize the true guru within me. Guru remains as a guru Disciple learns and changes Both are different Disciple has to experience his learning independently. Seed and a farmer Dependent on each other or completely free of one another? Seed has the ability to grow itself, disciple has the ability to learn oneself Farmer is defined by his crop and guru is defined by his disciples. Always there is a true guru within me I am disciple, I am guru I learn, I transform, I awaken I walk the path, I taste the fruits. Page #19 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ T Institutions There is no religion in institutions Not a church, mosque nor temple Religion is my true nature, it is within me When I read, pray, contemplate, meditate It is me doing something within me, by me, for me Religion is my true nature, it is within me As I understand my feelings, my misgivings, my weaknesses My strengths, I do understand the ultimate truth is within me Religion is my true nature, it is within me 18 I do not wear the costume of Jain, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim I live and think about my internal strength alone Religion is my true nature, it is within me Sugar is sweet, does not change its true nature Whether served in church, mosque or in temple Religion is my true nature, it is within me Jesus, Mohamad, Buddha, Mahaveer, all have achieved. Something much greater within themselves, seemingly unachievable Religion is my true nature, it is within me | Page #20 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Now I see my guru with new respect, their teachings within me I meditate, contemplate and can become like them, tapping energy within Religion is my true nature, it is within me I do not meditate on institution's many viewpoints I meditate on only one ultimate truth within me Religion is my true nature, it is within me I realize ultimate peace, tolerance, satisfaction is within me I feel oneness within and totally free from institutions Religion is my true nature, it is within me Page #21 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ T Knowledge - Knower Is my knowledge theoretical or practical? Is truth absolute or relative? Do I know through intuition or experimentation? Is breadth more important than depth? Einstein said if I lived again, I would not discover nuclear power He was a great seeker, realized infinite properties of an atom Humans use and misuse matter, as if it will provide happiness If his seeking turned inward, he would have found true happiness Gandhi lived for humanity, love among all humans He worked and prayed for unity But he regretted the division of the country Humans are united by knowledge of their own souls, not by country 20 Knowledge knows and reflects Clear and still like glass, deep like an ocean Powerful like fire, complete like a full moon Knowledge has its own taste of complete freedom Knowledge is me, soul, independent of this outer body Know, understand, and experience the self Without dependence on my senses Blind can see, deaf can hear; all can learn | Page #22 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ T Knowing is not dependent on the mind or intellect The ultimate knowledge-knower is my soul Clear of all emotions; clear of likes and dislikes Powerful, steadfast, everlasting This knowledge can never be theoretical or practical My soul the knower is in itself complete Knows the world as it is in practical Knows reality with infinite relative aspects My soul itself is a complete knower No need to have intuition or experimentation My depth has no limitation, breadth is boundary-less I know the whole world as it turns If I look within, I understand the world as it is I, knowledge-knower, am peaceful and joyful Totally independent of this world. Totally complete within, called the knower *** 21 Page #23 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Love We think of a mother's love for her child She bears the child for nine months Cares for the baby within, without touch, kiss or even smell Gives birth with profound pain and happiness It is hard to express the experience of mother's love We think of love between two friends They share everything, their day and night Share feelings when there is joy or sorrow If you are looking for one, you find both It is hard to express the experience of true friendship We think of love between two lovers As if they are living for each other They love, have family, share home, kids, money and more They share laughter and tears together It is hard to express the love between true lovers As a mother, friend, and lover We do feel some fears, anxieties, uncertainties, As if we are always dependent on something, someone We lose our sense of freedom, completeness within our own self It is hard to express these complex experiences Page #24 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Is there a love without doubts, fears, expectations? Independent, steady, unshakable? Live in Peace Two bodies are so different. Happy/sad, Healthy/sick, Rich/poor Just/unjust, Disabled/capable, Intelligent/dull, Living/dead. One thing is common. All are living. All have a life. It doesn't matter where and how they live. The soul is the same in all, with the same capacity for knowing. If we know and experience the soul, then we don't feel the differences in the bodies. We are able to overcome sadness, insecurity, dissatisfaction, and the need to do better. The soul is permanent; the body and the circumstances we live in change constantly. Focus on our permanent nature, deriving fulfillment from what we have within. To know and accept our complete true nature is the power to live in peace. To be able to face death and temporary changes of life is the power to rest in peace. Page #29 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ T Wealth Humans have spent lives over creating, acquiring or proper transferring of wealth. What is this wealth? Is it one's material wealth or one's worth? The material wealth is not mine to begin with I acquired this wealth through connection to this world Does this wealth more belong to the connections or to me? Is my worth my education, degrees, and professional trade? In the face of fast changing technologies, it can become useless Then how can I call this my worth? 28 My own true wealth and worth is my qualities, knowledge, soul And this wealth cannot be transferred, can be shared Cannot be created, can be propagated from within My own wealth should be learned, cherished And to fully experience, within myself. No one can Take this wealth from me, it is totally mine to keep Reality of life forces us to think Born will definitely die. All the acquired worth Including education, degrees, relations, become just memories | Page #30 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Natural disaster leaves us to think, everything vanishes in a flash, devastation Except my qualities of love, patience, and giving These are my real assets, not the wealth I acquired My own true wealth and worth is totally independent, without any fear Without any questions or obstacles, never decreases Is always there to enjoy and to share, what to acquire? Page #31 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ What I know! What I know, is only what I know at that time. A doctor sends a mother home, you are not quite ready. Just rest. A few hours later, mother comes back to the hospital with a baby! In all aspects of our world, we seem to know what we know at that time. Think of nutrition, our environment, water, or air Even think of the risks we take or security we create. We become vegetarian for our health and end up eating lots of pasta, processed sugar, flour, and soy, not knowing variety or having time to create a balanced diet. Then we think this is healthy! I need to slow down, need to take a break from the knowing of a particular time. I need to know myself, the Knower. Then I can know more clearly, of a specific time and also of eternity, how everything exists and how it changes. Page #32 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ When I Met When I met my true self, when guru showed me myself and I believed in guru, I tried to experience my true self Did I not know myself, and did guru have to show me? Or was what I believed all wrong, so I met myself I thought this body and the connections with this body, Like friends and family, was me and mine I thought what I experience with my senses, and think With my mind were all my own thinking and emotions I never knew that there is something within me Eternal, completely separate from my body and senses To perceive, to know, and to experience I never tried to look within me with deep focus I never knew myself, I was immersed in this world, this was my knowledge I got busy with the world's knowledge As if I never existed So I finally met myself, when guru showed me My soul within, complete, pure, to be cherished To be experienced with joy, freedom, and eternity Now, I am forever. I can experience myself forever. Page #33 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ T World Has So Much Suffering The more we see suffering The more we want to alleviate it Every human has a smile. Every heart feels happiness But some of us detach ourselves. Why? Is there something beyond the world? Is there a guru or perfect being with all the answers? Is there a permanent solution? Has history shown true improvement? It appears that suffering is alleviated, but it is not We offer medicines, but they only address physical needs We redistribute wealth, but this only improves material well being We clean our environment, but this only preserves the outside world Do any of these bring us inner happiness? The do-gooders feel pride in their work The doctor rejoices in curing sick bodies The politician delights in filling peoples' pockets The environmentalist celebrates cleaning air, land, water Do any of these bring us inner happiness? Families supporting each other, seem to bring joy Honeymoon days turn to quarreling Birthdays, graduations, then children leave the house Our central supports, our parents, age and die Do any of these bring us inner happiness? 32 | Page #34 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ T We tend to see suffering where it does not even exist Happiness is not connected to my body, health or sickness Happiness is not connected to the relations of this body Happiness is not in the circumstances, not in the environment Happiness is deep within me, it is my true nature The outside world is full of suffering and inside I feel bliss One needs to look, observe, feel, focus within The inside world is steadfast, pure, blissful, peaceful, perfect Does not require any change, cannot be changed, is ready to experience Gurus, prophets, have seen, felt, observed such perfection What need is there to change pure gold or a flawless diamond? One must believe that there is perfection within Then seek inner happiness despite worldly circumstances This is the path of realizing oneself, experiencing oneself I am not the doer, I am complete within, I am the knower Arihantas, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, and Sadhus Have realized their soul and are our examples to follow We humans are capable of attaining our inner unshakable bliss The experience of bliss within eclipses the sorrow outside Finding the bliss within, we shine light on those around us The more we see suffering The more we need to look within. I am sitting in Boston, MA, USA. Snow has been falling outside, so I woke up to white earth, brown trees covered with white buds, white flowers; if I look up there is blue sky covered with white rain. There is beauty of white, cleanliness of white, purity of white, and flying, singing, dancing, picture of white. Snow talks and I enjoy. It is as if I am in nature's museum! The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City is quite famous. People come from all over the world to see it. I remember one day, one of my cousins, but the age of my daughter, came from India to visit us in Connecticut. We were going to take her to New York. I asked, where do you want to go? She said, I have seen the city, so now I want to do shopping. Can you please take me to the Indian area for shopping? I said yes and we all got into the car. My young son, born in the USA, was also with us. He asked the girl, I hear you have seen the city, did you visit MOMA? She thought, I saw the Statue of Liberty, the World Trade Center, Times Square but, what is MOMA? She said no I haven't, but I do want to shop. She had never been exposed to modern art. He said, listen, if you have not seen MOMA, you have not seen New York. She was convinced. I told her, if you see the museum quickly, we may still be able to do shopping. She enjoyed the museum so much that I could not drag her out. For me, thank goodness, it closed at five that day. We did some quick shopping and I drove back an hour and halfto Connecticut. MONA, Mumukshus of North America is an amazing online organization that focuses on the soul. Today, Saturday morning, January 24th is Shree Kundkund Acharya's 136 Page #138 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ birthday. Shree Kundkund Acharya is the master on the topic of the soul. His writings of 2000 years ago are the most revered teachings of Jainism around the globe. He has written comprehensive and detailed books known on the topic of soul. This is my kind of museum and I can enjoy this forever. On this snowy morning, I remember the joy I saw in a girl who was never exposed to modern art and yet became completely engrossed in the MOMA. Similarly when I started reading the lectures given by Gurudev Shree on the Samaysar granth written by Pujya Kundkund Acharya for the first time I could not stop myself. I read about 6,000 pages in few months utilizing every free moment I had. The topic of the soul, which may not seem interesting to many, captured me. After indulging in the memory of MOMA from years ago, I refocus on the MONA-run swadhyay about to start. We begin by listening to a melodious prayer. We then discuss one topic, the soul, through three main texts, or granths: Ratnakarand Shravakachar, Pravachansar, and Niyamsar. Many may be unfamiliar with these names. But these are the fundamental books on the topic of the soul. Three lecturers joined us from India one at a time for about an hour each. We discuss the topic and ask questions. We have e-texts in front of us on our computers and iPads; with the translations in the language we are most familiar with, such as Hindi or Gujarati. First lecture: Pandit Uttam Chandji talks about Ratnakarand Shravakachar, and he discusses the first two shlokas of this granth. This granth, written by Shree Samantbhadracharya, describes the life of a Jain householder. It talks about how one can live while enjoying the Eternal, and not experience any sorrow, tears, or even temporary joy. He speaks very fluent Hindi with great speed and clarity. He explains the 137 Page #139 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ fundamental definition of Dharm (religion). The meaning of Dharm is not simply to do good and stay away from evil, neither is it blind faith. True Dharm is for me to experience, enjoy, and submerse in the true nature of the soul forever. The second lecture: Pandit Hemchandji talks about the Pravachansar written by Shree Kundkund himself. He speaks in Hindi with medium speed and tone. He explains the 114th gatha of this granth, explaining my true nature. My soul is a dravya, or substance, full of anant, infinite or uncountable, qualities and can be experienced as one full, unshakable, unbreakable, ever-blissful being, dravyarthiknaya. At the same time, each of my qualities can be experienced individually, Paryayrthiknaya. The third lecture: Rajubhai Kamdar speaks in fluent, authentic, Kathiavadi Gujarati. His voice is slow, monotonous; he seems to sing one tone for an hour. Today's topic is about how one can step back from this world and enjoy the bliss of one's soul. The topic is from gatha 77 to 87 from granth Niyamsar, written by Shree Kundkund himself. Stepping back from the world allows one to step into the soul, which I have never done before. Today is quite special because it is Shree Kundkund Acharya's birthday. Beautiful pure white earth feels like my soul as described by three gurus, based on three shashtras. It brings MOMA, MONA and Me together for an extraordinary feeling. To me, today, MOMA and the whole world seem uninteresting. Instead one topic, the soul, grips me, in different forms, books, angles, voices, languages, tones and speeds. I am immensely grateful to Pujya Kanji Swami and to the gurus who learned from him. They give their time to make important ancient texts accessible to us today. I feel lucky to, with the help of MONA, understand my selfand immerse in my eternal soul. 138 Page #140 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Pure and Applied? The doctor said, what we teach is half wrong in medical school Problem is we do not know which half is wrong Isn't this the problem of science today and forever? It maybe the reason our theories change every decade or so We do not know the ultimate truth and then believe in half truth All our fights, disagreements are about this half truth In medical science, we seem to progress, learn, regress Our quest to understand the body, to be healthy and happy, still seems far People talk about pure and applied sciences. If one does not know the pure, how could one apply? How could there be two sciences? The pure scientist's quest is to find the whole truth Does not believe in distractions from the quest in looking for applications The focus is to reach complete truth Does not matter how much time and effort it might take 139 Page #141 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ The applied scientist may think, why just keep searching? One should apply what one knows and benefit from it Forgoes the opportunity to find the complete truth And takes the risk of applying the half truth Both pure and applied science stop at the understanding of matter Ultimate science is the science of not only matter but also the soul Science of body changes as I change, circumstances change Science of soul stays the same, constant, blissful We neither know the ultimate truth, nor take the time to understand it Life is short and there's a lot to be done, so take the half-truth and run with it My ultimate peace, truth and happiness, is not in my body My ultimate peace, truth and happiness is in my soul, residing within this body 140 Page #142 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ The Wedding Jain philosophy explains complex human nature completely, explicitly, and perfectly. We witness this philosophy in our lives every day, but even more so during the big events of our lives such as these three days. The emotions of connection and renunciation are profound during a wedding. Wedding and renunciation! Sounds strange! Is a wedding an event of only connections, connections between two souls, two bodies, and two families? Or is it much more than that? For the wedding, the parents commit their wealth, health and time to make the celebration the best. After the celebration, my son or daughter is not going to come running to us for every discussion or call us every evening either. My child has found a lifelong partner to depend upon and be happy with. The first lifelong partners, the parents, are displaced by the second lifelong partner. Is this connection and renunciation in one? When we make new connections, the old ones take a back burner. We spend a life time maintaining the bonds provided to us by birth or life coincidences. In the present case, the first connection with parents was given by birth and second was made on Shadi.com. A quite wonderful, profound lifelong connection of two doctors, with similar thinking and nature, was established. A solemn puja will be performed before the wedding to remind us that we are here to enjoy the celebrations of connections, fully knowing the fragility, delicacy, pain, and tears that come with them. Can we be bonded to our connections and free from them at the same time? We experience strong bonds only if we also understand the freedom hidden in the bonds. For wedding dresses, one buys the best fabric. Then the tailor has to cut the fabric. For a 141 Page #143 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ moment, one fears that the best of best fabric is going to get cut. But the fabric has to find its own freedom first. Then the fabric has to get stitched just right to fit all the emotions. That is called the perfect dress. Mehndi is applied for hours in fine designs with great perfection. To balance the color and the designs, the lines have to be thick enough to give a deep color, yet delicate enough to portray an intricate illustration. After a couple of weeks, the deep bright color of Mehndi fades like the sunshine and evenings of our lives. If we invest in intricacies of understanding our soul, we can be steadfast within. Then we will not feel our connections deepening and fading like Mehndi, but be able to experience a calm, stable deep bright color of our own. Many instruments make one, beautiful melody. Many instruments are required to create harmony. Many of us will dance and make one moving circle, uniting with colors and music, fully knowing and wanting to forget all the challenges of our lives. The harmony is not in outside connections and circumstances, but within. My own infinite qualities join to create one strong, steadfast nature. The present life provides us with bonds, yet within us we are eternally complete and free. Isn't this a wonder! If I am complete within me, then I have the strength to fight and enjoy, to connect and disconnect, to laugh and cry, and to love. We bestow an eternal blessing to the couple to understand that strength within, which empowers one to live life fully. Strength within is our true strength, allowing us to share, give, take. At the end of the celebrations, parents may feel they are losing an important connection to their children, but we hope parents also connect with their souls. Yet these digits tell the story of a remarkable person in vivid detail. Hansraj Champshi Maru travelled to America from India in 1968. He completed a master's degree and a PhD in Chemical engineering in Chicago, even as he and I started a family. In 1978, we moved to Brookfield, Connecticut and lived there for thirty years. During that entire time, 203-775-1906 was our phone number. Even when we moved to Boston seven years ago with our children and grandchildren, these ten digits have remained as Hans' mobile number. Today, he received a phone call on his cell phone, and the person left a long message. The man is a Jain recently arrived from India, now in Texas, and has received a job opportunity in CT. When he Googled the location for a Jain Center in CT, our old address, 7 Trailing Ridge Road in Brookfield and 203-775-1906 appeared. When he reviewed the location on Google Maps, the location appeared to be a private property, and the man was confused, so he called. A tiny slice of earth, 7 Trailing Ridge Road, again offers deep significance to Hans' remarkable life. It was the house of Hans and our family for 20 out of the 30 years we lived in Connecticut. Even in today's technology era if someone searches for a Jain organization in the whole CT, he locates Hans's former house. A life of meaning brings new meaning to assortments of digits and slices of earth. Hans is outwardly an educated, successful engineer, who directed over 100 PhDs in alternative energy research and built a path-breaking fuel cell company. He is a father and a grandfather and in many ways the patriarch of the extended Maru clan in America 143 Page #145 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ and beyond. Yet above all, Hansraj Maru is a Jain. Others might see that Jainism manifests in Hansraj as a vegetarian, as someone who abstained from alcohol his whole life, even as work demanded attending gala dinners where he was pressured by his superiors to indulge. Yet more deeply, he has lived with Jain values, Jain ideas, Jain practices, throughout his life. He was raised in a small rural town in India as a farmer's son on one acre of land. When he was just eight years, old he would spend hours with Jain monks helping them write prayers after his school and farm work. After moving to the United States, he founded the Jain Center of Connecticut and taught for over two decades. He also was a regional Vice President for the Jain Association of North America, an association with a membership of about 100 Jain Centers. Even today, just like this phone call, we get 20 to 30 phone calls during the Jain festivals of Paryushan, Das laxan, and Mahaveer Jayanti asking how to find the Jain Center of Connecticut. To all who are close to him he is known for his loving personality with unshakable patience. As an executive at FuelCell Energy, Inc., he would talk with the same compassion to his boss as to the cleaner. All levels of employees, from secretaries to other chiefs, would come to his office for support and advice. When he volunteered with the public schools, we always heard about his calm, consistent efforts with all involved. While I try not to pick up any unknown numbers, he still answers the phone calls looking for the Jain Center with the same patience. People who drive up the quarter-mile long hilly driveway looking for a Jain temple at 7 Trailing Ridge Road will find a house that Hans left years ago. Why this book? Why Safe Danger? This is my second book, the first one was entitled Free Prisoner. After contemplating my free spirit in the walls of my body, I thought now I was safe. I had found my guru, I was on the right path. I worked for Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) for 18 years as a consultant. One thing I had learned quite clearly was that, when one feels confidant, or safe, one loses the sharp awareness towards safety and makes major mistakes. My goal is greater than anything I can achieve in this world and more final than any destination of this world; therefore my effort also has to be great, with awareness and sharpness every moment, with the danger of losing focus looming. On the other hand, the free spirit is always safe in these walls of the body. This body never touches my spirit, never is able to diminish my spirit in any way. So I am always safe and sound to be discovered, felt, cherished, and enjoyed. Gurudev has explained my soul, with such details and clarity that I feel capable to try to walk the path of achieving total bliss. As I listen to him, read his lectures, live through his teachings, feelings and thoughts flow through my mind and are written in the form of these poems. The writing process has given me a special chance to examine my beliefs, my connections to the family and this world. It has given me a clearer understanding of my existence in this world.
